Is of course, another woman’s treasure. We all know it is a good idea to recycle, conserve and generally be aware of the planet. Somehow actively pursuing what’s ecologically friendly is, in popular culture, often linked with being unstylish. We picture Birkenstocks with socks, and bland, natural colors. However, there are actually great gifts out there for green and need-to-be-more-green friends that have some funk to them.

The three items pictured above all have a fantastic honesty about them; you know exactly what they’re made of. I prefer useful items over sculptural ones, so my favorite is the trash can made of…paper trash. The bottle cap man is cute I suppose, but has an overly crafty feel, and may best serve his purpose in the recycling bin.

I agree, the trash can seems to be the best form/functio marriage, while the other too seem to be hot glue solutions to overflowing recycling bins. It seems to me that designers would benefit from taking some of the elegant solutions from the Rural Studio and applying them to this arena. Where the frame and the mannequin are crafty but ostentatious displays of the artist’s earth conscious intentions, Samuel Mockby and his crew created beautiful structures with all manner of rescued material while letting the function shine through just as much as the form. Perhaps product designers ought to think less about how recycling can be attached to something, and more about how that something can be integrated with (and benefit from) reconsidered materials.
