Matching buttons are as boring as buttoned-up, business men. Punch up your winter coats, and spring sweaters and jackets with large, colorful, plastic buttons. An assortment of colors will have the visual impact of scattered polka dots as seen on the Heatherette Fall 2006 runway. A single standout colored button shows the wearer sees the loss of a button as a creative opportunity (see photo of art student, Jessica).

So snap to it: dig an old knit out of your closet or buy one that already has nice big buttons (like the Free People version I’ve shown below) as a starting point. Then visit the notions section of your local fabric store for button shopping. (Make sure you buy the right size.) Your new look will cost less than a candy bar and really push some buttons.

For his handsewn groomsmen’s vests, my brother went through our grandmother’s gallon tin of buttons and pulled four different color palettes, one for each. To make his own stand out he picked his favorites in a variety of colors. The earthy brown of the fabric held them all together. I’ll look for a picture…. The buttons weren’t nearly as big as the ones here, but it was back in 2001 after all.
