Cool challenge. This week’s task was to create a dress for ice princess, Sasha Cohen. Apropos - considering the 2006 Winter Olympics are about a month away. The icing on the cake was watching the competitors don their own skating costumes for a lesson with the national champ prior to heading to the studio.
Cold result. Most of the outfits were as ugly as the Harding-Kerrigan debacle. Zulema, Nick, Daniel and Chloe’s were all passable, but were not nearly as elegant as Cohen’s skating. The number of models that paraded down the runway with skirts ending above crotch level gave me chills. Once again Santino’s creative vision got the better of him. The judges likened his feathered piece to a turkey. In the end, Santino was let off with another warning, while Emmett, who should clearly stick to menswear, was thrown out of the Project Runway coop.

I agree that the designs were not inspiring this go-around. But I don’t think that Emmett’s design was “vulgar” as the Vogue(?) judge asserted. I caught Emmett on the Today show last week and when asked about Santino he said, “He’s good for TV. I’m a good designer.” Go Emmett! But I’m glad we have another week of Santino, as much as I think he deserves to go.
